Akwa United began their CAF Confederation Cup campaign on a disappointing note on home soil after losing 1-2 to visiting Hawks of Gambia at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Sunday.

The Hawks put up a stout- hearted performance with Goal keeper Yankubu Calley the star of the show, thwarting every of Akwa’s attacking move. The  visitors were more expansive , taking every opportunity as it comes. It wasn’t long, Muhammed Jallow gave them the lead inside 11th minutes and Akwa were trailing 0-1. Gambian International Lamin Charity scored the second goal with a powerful drive that left Ojo Olorunlete with absolutely no chance to increase the tally to 0-2 before half-time.

After the blast for the second half to begin, the Promise Keepers send all men forward in search of a goal and a possible come back and got rewarded in the 71st minutes with Victor Mbaoma scoring from close range  to reduce the scores to 1-2 for the home fans to cheer.

With the result, the Gambian side have a better advantage of advancing to the second round with a draw or win at home in the second leg. It will be an uphill task for the promise keepers to overturn the deficit away from home when they travel for the second leg in Gambia.

on

Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries FC face a tough task against League leaders  Akwa United who are unbeaten in their last three games in the NPFL.

The Lagos based club finished in the second position in the NPFL last season but have struggled to replicate that form in the current campaign and are currently 17th on the table.

Both teams return to domestic business after CAF assignment with contrasting results. The Promise Keepers will be hoping to push CAF disappointment aside when they battle MFM much later in the day in the rescheduled  fixture in a bit to maintain their impressive record this season.

Meanwhile, MFM will move out relegation zone with a win. Expect a massive cracker.
