Alleged N5.8bn scandal: PDP asks Osinbajo to make refunds, seek restitution

Published

on

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has advised Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to seek forgiveness and make restitution for entangling himself in alleged corruption and sharp practices. Osinbajo this past week, was indicted by the House of Representatives in an alleged N5.8 billion north-east intervention fund scandal.

In reaction, the presidency on Friday, November 9, dismissed the lower house that there were violations in the approval of N5.8 billion fund by Osinbajo. Laolu Akande, senior special assistant on media and publicity to the vice president, in a statement in Abuja, said the insinuations were false and baseless.

The PDP however insists Osinbajo is guilty of the charges, accusing the vice president of frittering the N5.8 billion fund. In a statement sent to Legit.ng on Saturday, November 17, the PDP’s national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbodiyan, said Nigerian have lost faith in the vice president.

Part of the statement read: “It is heart-rending that Professor Osinbajo, despite his sanctimonious posturing, is being fingered in the frittering of the N5.8 billion meant for the purchase of food and general welfare of suffering Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the north-east. “Professor Osinbajo should know that he has come to the end of the road and that Nigerians have completely lost faith in him, since the House of Representatives exposed his complicity in this unpardonable debauchery against weak and vulnerable citizens.

“Instead of asking for forgiveness and making restitution, Professor Osinbajo is busy trying to divert attention from the reeking corruption of the Buhari administration, while bandying figures in an attempt to distance himself from the failures of this administration. “From the probe, which exposed how the Vice President, then as Acting President, in 2017, drew N5.8 billion from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation, without the appropriation of the National Assembly, only to superintend over the purported spending as the Chairman of Board of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), it is clear that it was never in the interest of the suffering and displaced masses.

“The PDP therefore expects Professor Osinbajo to end his grandstanding, show remorse and make restitution for this debauchery against humanity.”

Meanwhile, the director general of NEMA, Mustapha Maihaja, has been accused of moves to evacuate and dispose the tons of rice which has now being rotten. The accusation comes a week after a House of Representatives committee on emergency and disaster preparedness indicted Maihaja for fraud, misappropriation and embezzlement of N33 billion released to the agency.

On Thursday, November 15, the committee alleged that Maihaja, in collaboration with the director, relief services, arrived in Gombe on Wednesday, November 14, contacted NEMA officers in Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Yobe and Taraba states to prepare and forge papers to claim that they received the items, while making effort to evacuate and dispose the items from the warehouse in Gombe.

Tribunal Chides PDP Nat’l Legal Adviser, Emmanuel Enoidem Over Misconduct

Published

on

By AmanamHillary Umo-Udofia

A mild drama ensued on Thursday at the National/State Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, when People’s Democratic Party National Legal Adviser, Barr. Emmanuel Enoidem was disgraced by the tribunal Chairman for gross misconduct and contempt of court.

The three-man panel led by Justice W. O. Akanbi at the resumed sitting of the tribunal dismissed an application brought by Assam Assam (SAN) counsel to Hon. David Lawrence for extension of time to reply the petition filed by Hon. Charles Sunday Ebongho and the All Progressives Congress against the declaration of Hon. David Lawrence as the winner of Eket State Constituency in the just concluded elections.

Shortly after the tribunal gave its ruling and struck out the first respondent from being a party to the petition, Enoidem who did not announce his appearance at the tribunal confronted the panel that the ruling was inappropriate. Angered over the development, the tribunal Chairman ordered him to sit down as he does not have the power to speak over the matter. “Who are you?” The Chairman queried. “This Honourable tribunal does not recognise you”, he further added.

Counsel to the first respondent Assam Assam (SAN), thereafter intervened and apologised for the actions of the PDP National scribe. Apparently embarrassed by his conduct, Enoidem apologised to the tribunal.

Drama started again when the tribunal called on the second petition filed by Hon. Kufre Akpabio and the All Progressives Congress against Hon. Pat Ifon, Peoples Democratic Party and INEC as first, second and third respondents respectively, Enoidem announced that he was holding brief for counsel to 1st Respondent, Solomon Umoh (SAN).

Enoidem immediately claimed that the petitioners were not interested in prosecuting the case to the amazement of the panel and other parties. Chairman of the Panel fumed and called on counsel to the second and third respondents to speak about the case, which they answered in the affirmative that the petitioners were diligent in their prosecution of the matter.

The chairman then queried Enoidem, that he should have consulted with other parties since he is appearing for the first time. “This tribunal is embarrassed with your behaviour, you should have consulted with your learned colleagues before making such contemptuous claims. It is totally unacceptable”, the chairman added.

Enoidem again apologised for the second gaffe before the tribunal adjourned the matter for the next sitting.
