Just In: Rep who dumped APC finally decamps to PDP

Published

on

Jagaba Adams, (Kagarko/Kachia) who was a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has formerly decamped to the House of Representatives on Thursday, February 8, when he identified himself as a member of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Akwa Ibom INFO gathered that the lawmaker made this former declaration while contributing to a motion of urgent public importance on the need to add Kaduna and Plateau to a list of states under the siege of herdsmen.

He said: “I’m Hon Jagaba Adams Jagaba and I am of the Peoples Democratic Party.”

This statement triggered jubilation in the PDP camp, prompting the PDP lawmakers to congratulate the minority leader, Leo Ogor.

However, the speaker, Yakubu Dogara, who presided over the plenary, however, said that Jagaba remained a member of the APC until he officially informs the House, Premium Times reports.

Jagaba Adams had in 2018 formally dumped Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

[OPINION] Abak State Constituency 2019; Right of a Seat

Published

on

By Adede Emmanuel Ibok

It is true that democracy must be built through open societies that share information. When there is information, there is enlightenment and where there is a debate, there is a solution. A society that is not well informed is completely deformed.

For sometimes now, there still exist in some quarters question of where the pendulum of Abak state constituency seat will swing to. Anyone who knows the history of Abak state constituency seat in particular, do I think recognizes that domination of an elective office in the local government by one bloc is never a happy arrangement for the people. It baffles me to discover that as far as the Abak state constituency seat is concerned comes 2019, there is unanimous conspiracy of silence in the political spectrum in the local government. It is pertinent to mention here that in a room where people unanimously maintain conspiracy of silence, a word of TRUTH always sounds like a gun shot.

Without prejudice to the political reality of Abak state constituency seat and the players therein, the conspiracy of silence existing in the house must be broken. For I see this conspiracy as engineered by reason of greed and selfishness. The breaking of this conspiracy of silence which is triggered by ingenuity of a peace – loving Abak man is not aimed at any individual or group. However, if the bullet hit your action, take it in good faith. At a point like this, every Abak person should try and develop an over-riding loyalty and love for the peaceful co-existence and integration of essential bloc in order to preserve the best in the society. This is because I am seeing oceans of our political history been made more turbulent by the ever-rising greed and selfishness of our political players. Our political history is cluttered with wreckage of greed, political myopia and chronic selfishness.

Adede Emmanuel Ibok

Political players in the local government cannot deny the fact that there exist two political blocs in Abak namely; THE EASTERN ANNANG BLOC AND THE URBAN BLOC. There is also no denying of the fact that we as a people with common ancestry, culture and heritage are bless with two elective offices in the local government, an executive chairman and house of assembly member. With these two offices, there is a room for fairness and equity, hence unity and progress. The two offices give us a clear trajectory to move Abak forward in her quest for political development. In the recent history and political tradition of the local government, those elective offices are always spread to accommodate the two blocs in every political dispensation. Delineation of political wards which is an element of modern democracy makes it further easier for evenly spread of these elective offices. With abundance of opportunities offered by democracy, Abak people must have an unquenchable spirit of fairness, unity, common interest and patriotism. When the needful is done by putting on this unquenchable spirit of love and unity, there will be a famed resilience to work for the rapid growth and transformation of Abak. There must be a dream of hope, aspiration and commitment to a greater future for our people. To get to this level, we must start somewhere. We must gain the trust of our people. There must be sincerity of purpose in every action. Abak political players must demonstrate their ability to lead the people by projecting trust into them which will eventually trigger love and obedience from the followers. This is the road that we must travel as 2019 elections draw nearer.

Without any blind sentiment whatsoever, the analysis below gives a clear evidence of my point. From the analysis, Elder (Barr.) Imoh Williams is the present elected chairman of Abak local government area. He is an Eastern Annang son. It is therefore empirically evidence that the remaining elective office which is the House of Assembly seat is a reserved right of the URBAN BLOC. Also looking critically at the analysis below,  there is a shocking revelation that out of the four wards making the urban bloc, two out of the four have taken their due slot remaining the other two. The analysis  shows that in 1999, Hon. Imoh Ibokette was elected from Abak Urban ward 1. In 2007, Hon. Uwem Udoma was elected from Abak Urban ward 3. This therefore implies that in 2019, the seat of Abak state constituency in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly is mainly for Abak Urban 2 and Abak Urban 4. Any arrangement outside this is borne out of perpetual tendency of subjugation and suppression of proponents party which will eventually cause a very serious political volcanic eruption in the local government.

Published

on

In an extraordinary meeting held yesterday in Abak, supporters of Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ekon across the eleven wards of Abak reaffirmed their support for the member representing Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika federal constituency in the green chamber of the National Assembly Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ekon.

The supporters under the aegis of Emmanuel Ekon support group international said that morally justified in supporting him. In their statement, “there is no way we will not have thrown our support behind a man who has performed exceedingly well in that discharge of the core mandate given to him by the people of the constituency”.

International Coordinator, Mr. Emmanuel Ibok

Speaking at the meeting, the international coordinator of the organization Mr. Emmanuel Ibok who presided over the meeting informed members that the lawmaker is a man with a large heart, a man that has his constituents at heart. According to the coordinator, “the determination and zeal to change the stories of young people in particular in the constituency is triggered by his sincere love for his people” In his speech, he took the members through Memory Lane from 1999. The atmosphere of the meeting was highly charged with ovation as the coordinator comprehensively and meticulously enumerated the achievements of the lawmaker in six years. He challenged that if anyone from 1999-2011 has achieved half of what Rt Hon Emmanuel Ekon has achieved should come out with his score card.

He further stressed that supporters of Rt Hon Emmanuel Ekon should not involve themselves in politics of blackmail and character assassination that has taken over the center stage of politics these days.

While calling on every member to be actively involve in the political happening in their different wards, he encouraged that the only way their impact will be felt in 2019 is for all the members to become mobilizers of voters. He admonished that even if the organization has one million membership strength, and that it would be of no effect without voter’s card. He therefore asked all members to obtain their voter’s card and to mobilize people in their respective communities to go out and register.

After a lengthy deliberation, the organization passed a vote of confidence on Rt Hon Emmanuel Ekon on his effective and efficient representation in the National Assembly. They also thrown their support behind the re-election of His Excellency Deacon Udom Emmanuel as the governor of Akwa Ibom State comes 2019.

A vote of confidence was also passed on the Senate minority leader, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio. The acknowledged his leadership roles as the leader of the People Democratic Party in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The organization lauded the performance of the Senate minority leader as seen during the just concluded commissioning of over 70 constituency projects across the senatorial district. They reiterated that their support for the re-election of the senator in 2019 is intact.

The organization observed a minute silence in honour of their departed patron late Mr. Charles Ekon who was led to rest on the 15th February, 2019  at his home town Iwuken Etim Ekpo local government area.

2019 Elections: Monitor Politicians Spending – INEC to EFCC

Published

on

The Independent National Electoral Commission has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to monitor the sources of funding of political parties’ campaigns as the 2019 general elections approach.

The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said this when the acting EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja on Thursday.

According to the Electoral Act, no presidential candidate can spend over N1bn, no governorship candidate can spend over N200m and no senatorial candidate can spend above N40m.

The law also limits the amount of money that a person or association can donate to a political campaign.

However, the INEC chairman said most political parties and politicians had no regard for the law. He therefore called on the EFCC to assist INEC in curbing corruption.

Yakubu said, “The Electoral Act places limits on the amount that each individual can spend in an election and also the amount that friends of candidates and parties can contribute in the election.

“We want the EFCC which has the mandate and capacity to track and trace sources of funds to work closely with us so that we can trace within the limits of the law. Our democracy should never be on sale and I believe by working closely with the EFCC, we can achieve that.”

The INEC chairman said the anti-graft agency should also help the electoral body to tackle the issue of bribing voters at polling units.

He said, “As we approach the 2019 general elections, we will require your support essentially in two ways. Number one, INEC is worried by the recent trend of vote buying at open polling stations. Candidates and parties go to polling stations with sacks of money to induce voters.

“Only the votes of citizens should determine who wins an election. Our democracy must never be for sale on the open market. It is the will of the people that should determine who wins.

“Open vote buying will not be tolerated by the commission and we don’t want the 2019 general election to be determined by the amount of money that people have.”

Yakubu thanked the EFCC for helping the commission to expose corrupt officials, many of whom, he said, were facing prosecution in several courts.

The INEC boss said over 200 officials had been sacked or suspended for alleged corrupt practices. He, however, maintained that most INEC officials were hard-working and honest.

He said at least 85 officials died due to stress last year, adding that their work for the commission must be appreciated.

Yakubu added, “We interdicted a total of 205 officials. I also wish to say that among the staff of the commission are some of the conscientious and most hard-working Nigerians and it is for that reason that last year, the commission promoted 7,330 staff members.

“I also wish to say that we are one of the agencies in the country working under extreme pressure with time limits. Everything we do has a time limit under the law. In January, we conducted elections in three states and we have another one in Katsina this Saturday and thereafter, we have another one in Taraba.”

“As a result of the tremendous pressure on the staff, it may interest you to know that we lost 85 employees of INEC, many of them were as a result of stress-related illnesses. In fact, as we speak, one of our officials had a stroke yesterday and is in hospital. “

Earlier, the acting EFCC chairman had said most of the problems plaguing Nigeria were caused by corruption.

He added that even cancer could be traced to corruption.

Magu called on Nigerians to assist the anti-graft agency to tackle corruption, adding that the EFCC could not do it alone.

He also commended INEC for helping to tackle corruption.

The EFCC boss said, “Everyone must join in the fight against corruption. Corruption is a disaster, it has done too much damage in this country and I believe INEC is fighting corruption indirectly. They may not be fighting corruption the way we are fighting it. That is why I said fight corruption whichever way you want to fight it.”
